Everytime I watch Basingstoke and get back my dad asks me who we played and how we got on he gives me a story of when he played for Newbury Town in the Vauxhall Conference back in the 80s before they went bust, and how he "never lost" to Eastleigh or Havant or Yeading etc.

He also recently said he went up where Basing Rovers used to play and here was nowt but a plaque there acknowledging the club's existence (or something like that I kinda wasn't listening tbh in a kind of "Here we go again"  Roll Eyes way.

I have tried researching both on the net, but details are very scarce. Anyone know anything on either club from those times or in general? I haven't been able to confirm if what my old man has told me is true or not. Cheesy

You probably need the archives of the relevant local paper, Josh. The stuff available on the internet may not go back to the 80's. The Gazette archives can be accessed at the Library - you have to have some idea of what you're looking for and what dates of papers you want, but Dave finds the staff very helpful when he needs something for the programme.
I would imagine there is a similar system for Newbury.

I'm sure there must be someone on here who could point you in the right direction, though.  Smiley

Can't recall Newbury ever being the Conference, they were in the same league as us in the early 90's and had a lot of ex Reading players including Rico.
They got kicked out of their ground when the Chairman went to jail i think and finished the season having to play at Wokingham's ground before going bust

So far all I have dug up is that Newbury weren't in the Conference. I think the league they played in was the Athenian League before joining the Isthmian.

I've done a bit of reading into AFC Newbury before and just found the whole situaton a bit confusing. Seems as though they folded and reformed every ten minutes. FCHD (football club history database) may be able to help you a bit Josh, google it.
